Ambigram

Posted on August 4, 2020August 4, 2020 by AJ

The word ambigram comes from ambi- meaning both and gram meaning drawing or writing. An ambigram is a drawing, typically of a word, that can be read in more than one direction – such as both right side up and upside down. A type of typographical art form, I found it while researching 101 things to do in 1001 days and decided I needed to make my own. Maybe making one with just two letters is cheating, but I like the outcome.

I use Adobe Illustrator and first drew an A. Then I extended the left side of the A to make it into a j. I decided to use a lowercase j because I liked the look of the dot. I then had to flip the finished letter to finish the ambigram.

Want to make your own ambigram without a design program? Try this free ambigram generator! Or you can try FlipScript which has some very cool designs, but charges to use them.
